How to Make an AI Cover of a Song With New Lyrics

Upload a song, paste new lyrics, describe a style and get two versions back. We tried it on three of our own songs with Suno V6 and Music Cover on DER.

Disclosure: DER is our product. Every model in this post runs on DER, and you pay DER in credits when you use it.

To make an AI cover of a song with new lyrics, upload the song, paste your lyrics, describe the style you want and pick a model. On DER each cover comes back in two versions that you can play and download, and you pay per cover, with no subscription. We tried it on three songs of our own with Suno V6 and Music Cover. Suno V6 changed each song's sound more and sang the new lyrics more clearly; Music Cover stayed closer to the original, keeping every song within two seconds of its original length.

What you need

  • A song you wrote or have the rights to use. We made our three with Text to Music on DER first, so every song in this post is our own.
  • Your new lyrics, as plain text. We kept the same number of lines as the original in every verse and chorus.
  • One sentence about the new style: genre, instruments, tempo and the kind of voice.

Step by step

  1. Open the AI Song Cover Generator on DER and upload your song.
  2. Pick a model. Suno V6 is selected by default; Music Cover is the other model.
  3. Paste your new lyrics.
  4. Describe the new style, and choose a male or female voice if you want one.
  5. Start the cover. The Studio shows the price first.
  6. Play both versions, keep the one you like and download it.

  1. Paper Boats as 80s synth-pop. Both models sang the new chorus, “Neon postcards, flying through the dark”. Suno V6 turned the soft ballad into a brighter, beat-driven track that runs 17 seconds longer than the original. Music Cover kept the original's length and much of its gentle sound, and speech-to-text caught fewer of its words than Suno V6's (80% against 97%).
  2. Red Line as a stripped-back acoustic song. Suno V6 took most of the drums out and softened the sound, which is what “stripped-back” asked for. Music Cover's version sounds softer than the original too, but keeps the drums at about the original's level. Both sang the new lyrics clearly: speech-to-text caught 97% of Suno V6's words and 95% of Music Cover's.
  3. Willow Road as dance-pop. Suno V6 fit the whole song into 127 seconds against the folk original's 174, so the dance-pop version moves at a quicker pace, and it still sang almost every word (94%). Music Cover kept the original's length, and more of its lines blurred (80%).

Suno V6 or Music Cover?

  • Suno V6 remakes the song in the style you describe. It costs from 12 credits per song (≈ $0.12), whatever the length of the song.
  • Music Cover sings your new lyrics over the melody of the song you upload. Its price follows the length of the song, from 6 credits per song (≈ $0.06).
  • If Suno V6 turns an upload down, the Studio offers to run the same song with Music Cover.

Pick Suno V6 when you want the song to sound new: in our test it moved further from each original and sang the new words more clearly. Pick Music Cover when the new lyrics should sit on the original's timing, for example to match a video you already cut: every one of its covers stayed within two seconds of the original. Each Suno V6 cover cost 12 credits, and each Music Cover cover cost 6 credits for our songs of two to three minutes.

Tips for a better cover

  • Keep the same number of lines as the original. We did, and every cover reached the final chorus.
  • Name the instruments and the beat in the style sentence. With “solo acoustic guitar and soft piano”, Suno V6 took the drums out of a rock song.
  • When the words matter most, start with Suno V6. Speech-to-text caught 94 to 97% of its words, against 80 to 95% for Music Cover.
  • To keep the original's timing, use Music Cover. Its covers ran within two seconds of each original.

Try it

Start a cover in the AI Song Cover Generator, or read about each model first: Suno V6 and Music Cover. If you do not have a song yet, make one with Text to Music. Every music tool on DER is on the music page, and pricing lists the credits for each model.

How we tested

Three original songs made with Text to Music on DER; the first of each song's two versions was the source. Both cover models got the same style sentence and the same new lyrics, with the voice set to match the original. Every cover returns two versions; we show the first version of each. We also ran every song through speech-to-text and counted how many of our lyric words it picked up.

Credits are what each run actually cost on November 4, 2026. Prices change: each model's page has the current one.
